In Memory Of

With Love to Uncle Brad (photo center)
May 27, 1958 - Jan. 25, 2008
Moab, Utah

When hiking/biking/rafting through red canyons,
or gazing at vermillion cliffs and starry skies,
he said, " THIS is my religion."

It has taken me some time to figure out what
I would say for/about Uncle Brad.
SO, I wrote the following poem
yesterday with my own imperfections in mind.

Mounds of copper stone
Misshapen and irregular
With divets, crooks and crannies
From ancient forces of wind, water and ice
Showing nature has gone wild and free
Carving red stone faces by the mile
At night the stars light its canopy
By day, the sun projects its majesty
Flowers grow and eagles soar
Land sliced by the trembling river
Prickly pears, fine grains of sand
Mysterious writings from ancient man
Worn and eroded over time
The unpredictable flaws of the land
Show its beauty even more
Than mere flawless sand
An omnipotent love indeed
Embraced this canyonland
The powers of Nature carve and sculpt
Behind the Masterʼs hand

Thanks for the river trip. Thanks for touching Brad. You two started a healing process in the family. Your poem is remarkable. It contributed to the first wet eyes at the memorial service.

Note: by the phrase "you two" I realize it could mean you and Brad, although I meant you and Brandon. Either way. Hmmmmm, both.
