Proceed with caution

He took a little spill
He twisted his leg a little
EMT's said, "How does it feel?"
They cut his hot motor boots off
to see if it had broken
"You did a number this time."
And they were not just jokin'
Above shows the dislocated ankle
as they cut off the boot in the ambulance
Above shows him lying on his back with knee and shin pointing up, ankle dislocated to his left
Above and below are post accident day 9
the first follow up visit at the surgeon's office

Below is day 17, still swollen and discolored

That brings us to today, day 39, still swollen, bruises mostly faded.

We had been told all along that he would need crutches with no weight bearing for a full 8 weeks. The 2 fractures would be healed in 6 weeks, but the ligaments needed 8 before weight bearing.

He went to the surgeon on Wednesday. The doc said everything was looking so good he could start slowly putting weight on it. After several days of getting used to that , he could wean down to only one crutch, then get off the crutches gradually from there. He was thrilled.

So for the last 2 days he was letting his foot get used to the walking motion. Today at work ( light duty) he took a couple steps without his crutches. He was so happy, he then threw his crutches across the room full of FBI agents. I believe they all laughed and applauded.

Truthfully he will still need them for a little support, but he can definitely hobble around the house without them now. Just his walking cast/boot on. For now, it is great, even though it is still swollen and he needs to rest it by nighttime.

3 weeks ahead of schedule. He is having surgery at the end of February to remove the hardware. The doc debated removing it. He asked Brandon how active he was. Brandon told him some of his "leisure" activities and the doc said, we are definitely removing this for you. You will bend it or break it with your lifestyle.

His goal now is to be able to do a small hike in Moab in March. Then several 14ers this summer. Says Brandon.

Wow. My whole family (dad, mom, husband) were all gathered around the laptop checking out your sick pictures. I've never known anyone's foot to look like that. . .

Can you say "Ouch" oh my goodness, but you know what impresses me the most, is that you had a camera and actually thought to take a picture while in the ambulance...healthy healing!

ps I am a friend of Sheri's and hit your blog from hers, I have a Bethany :)

Tell Brandon he's not allowed to do a 14er without checking with me first . . .I really want to do one this summer.

oh that looks a little painful and utterly wrong, but somehow you can't help but stare at it for a while. I'm glad Brandon is tough as nails, though, and is on the mend. We're rooting for him over at the Bergeson house!

haha I thought my foot was pretty gnarly... but he puts me to shame!! I'm sorry that this happened, that's no fun at all. That's really cool that he's doing so well and already planning the things he's going to do- way to be optimistic! :D

first thoughts as I saw the pictures of the ankle: OUCH! and EWWW! Next thought: I would never have expected Brandon's feet to look so soft and well pedicured. :)

Yeah Brandon! Nothing like recovery-- Take it slow so you can STAY ahead of schedule.
