My 11 yr old daughter is studying ancient Greece in school right now.
K: "Mom, who is your favorite out of Plato, Socrates, or Aristotle?"
Me: "Umm... Can you refresh my memory on the difference between the 3 of them?"
K: "Socrates believed that an unexamined life is not worth living, and he believed that if someone truly knows right from wrong, then they could do no wrong.
Plato believed that mathematics was the key to life and was the student of Socrates.
Aristotle believed that if you examined everything you would understand everything and he started the basics of modern scientific research methods. He also taught Alexander the Great."
Me: "Umm... I pick the first one."
PS As I go to post this she informs that philosophy means "love of wisdom" in ancient Greek and that Roman numerals were actually invented by the Greek.
Duh, didn't everyone know that?

I pick Socrates. Plato second. (Math had a great deal of philosophy and mysticism in its origins.) Aristotle had some beliefs concerning handicapped people which did a lot of damage for the next 1000 years.
I would have to ask the difference. I was clueless. I have heard the names, but I don't even remember studying ancient Greece. And I do believe I graduated from high school and attended 2 years of college. Hmmmmm. Shows what was important in my life.
hmmmm...i'll take Aristotle. A = A. Plato's urging for the abolition of private families still sits wrong with me. I don't know much about Socrates. Except he was on Bill and Ted's.....
Fun stuff Bethany....;)
Those darn kids always keeping us on our toes...haha I pick # 3 Aristotle...uummm I guess, I don't remember any of that either....yikes
I'm more of an Epicurean kind of guy. Follow that up with a large helping of Stoicism, and you've got me pegged. Yeah, I know: more Roman than Greek. What can I say? I've taken 6 years of Latin and only 2.5 of Greek, so I go with the numbers.
Well, I have viewed Anhenobarbus textor as becoming more Spartan as of late, rather than Roman. Silly me.
AT, would those numbers be Roman or Greek?
Beth - Glad Kass is having so much fun studying the "love of wisdom". She should talk to Shematite. Yea! Our kids love to learn!
Yay for learning. As of the moment my favorite philosopher is John Locke. "People are inherently good" and all that.
